What do inputs mean, and where does data come from?

Focal length controls field of view, aperture influences light and depth rendering, and subject distance sets the focus target. Circle of confusion (CoC) is the assumed blur threshold for acceptable sharpness.

Calculation logic and formula interpretation

The model applies standard geometric-optics relationships to compute hyperfocal distance, then derives near and far focus limits. In practical terms, longer focal lengths and wider apertures usually narrow depth of field.

As subject distance approaches hyperfocal distance, the far limit can tend toward infinity. Real-world sharpness perception can still vary by sensor, output size, and viewing conditions.

What does the output represent, and how should it be read?

Near limit is the closest acceptable focus point, far limit is the farthest acceptable focus point, and total depth of field is the distance between them.

Interpret hyperfocal and DOF values with shooting intent. Portrait setups often benefit from shallow DOF, while landscape work may prioritize wider focus coverage.

Real-world numeric example

Example setup: 50 mm lens, f/2.8 aperture, 3 m subject distance, and a common full-frame CoC assumption. The tool returns near and far limits in meters.
